Folded pages. Condizione: Fine. First Edition. Program for The Hunchback of Notre Dame is a 1923 American film directed by Wallace Worsley, starring Lon Chaney, and produced by Carl Laemmle and Irving Thalberg. One page, folded, printed in brown ink, decorated, with portrait of Lon Chaney. The supporting cast includes Patsy Ruth… Miller, Norman Kerry, Nigel de Brulier, and Brandon Hurst. The film was Universal's "Super Jewel" of 1923 and was their most successful silent film, grossing over $3 million. The film is most notable for the grand sets that recall 15th century Paris as well as Lon Chaney's performance and spectacular make-up as the tortured bell-ringer of Notre Dame. The film elevated Chaney, already a well-known character actor, to full star status in Hollywood, and also helped set a standard for many later horror films, including Chaney's The Phantom of the Opera in 1925. In 1951, the film entered the public domain (in the USA) due to the claimants failure to renew its copyright registration in the 28th year after publication. Fine. Illustrated (illustratore).

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. One prior owner name on flyleaf. Inscribed on half-title page to another prior owner "Mick" by the subject's niece, actress CARLA LAEMMLE. NO dust jacket. 288 pages. A very good copy. Paper slightly age-darkening as would be expected. Illustrated with some b&w photos. Biography of t…he head of Universal Pictures, the studio that produced Stroheim's FOOLISH WIVES, Lon Chaney Srs. PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME, Paul Leni's CAT AND THE CANARY, THE MAN WHO LAUGHED, and many other silent film classics. This volume was published just as the talkie era was coming into its own, with Universal continuing to make a mark in the horror genre with DRACULA and FRANKENSTEIN, although this biography is focused almost entirely on Laemmle's personal life and his participation in the development of the film industry in the silent era.

Condizione: Fine. January 20, 1976., 1976. Fine. - Over 55 words typed on his personal 8-1/2 inch high by 6-1/4 inch wide stationery with his facsimile signature embossed as letterhead. A brief letter by Carl Laemmle, Jr. addressed to his friend City Center producer Jean Dalrymple, thanking her for the plant and hoping she can u…se the plane ticket to come to his party which he's had to reschedule. "I got your plant. It is lovely." "Sorry I had to cancel the party but expect to have it in four or five weeks. Use the plane ticket to come out then." Apparently not feeling well, he apologizes "Sorry I can't write more but don't want to overdo it." Signed "Junior", his familiar name, in his shaky hand. Fine. The son of the Universal Studios founder of the same name, Carl Laemmle, Jr. was head of production from 1928 to 1936 in the early years of the "talkies". Although such pioneers as Georges Melies had produced horror films as early as the 1890's, Carl Laemmle, Jr. advanced the genre with such classic successes as "Dracula", "Frankenstein", "The Mummy", "The Invisible Man", "Bride of Frankentstein", etc. Despite these successes and others, such as "All Quiet On the Western Front", "East of Borneo", "The Old Dark House", "Imitation of Life", and "Showboat", Laemmle earned a reputation as spending too much on films that did not recoup their costs. Following a series of flops, Carl Laemmle Senior and Junior were forced to sell the company. The recipient, Jean Dalrymple (1902-1998) was the dynamic producer and director of theater and light-opera at Manhattan's City Center. Dalrymple began her career in Vaudeville, appearing with James Cagney and Carey Grant in the early 1930s. She was a founding member of the American Theatre Wing, the theatre service organization. She worked over the years as a personal manager for the likes of Leopold Stokowski, Mary Martin, Jos Iturbi, Andre Kostalanetz, Nathan Milstein, and Lily Pons. She began her work at City Center with its founding in 1943, serving as a board member, producer, and publicist. Her productions there from the 1940s through the 1960s were a revitalizing influence on the whole New York theatre scene. In 1951, Jean Dalrymple married Major-General Philip deWitt Ginder, commander of the Thunderbirds in Korea. She was a friend to Presidents and entertainment personalities throughout the world.

Condizione: Very good. - Over 160 words typed on his 8-1/2 inch high by 6-3/8 inch wide creamy white personal stationery with his facsimile signature embossed in gilt at the top. Responding to his friend New York City Center producer Jean Dalrymple, Laemmle apologizes for not replying sooner as his "secretary has not been here".… He goes on to congratulate Jean for the "great success of Jose's 80th birthday. I'm sure it took a lot of hard work" [referring to the vistuoso pianist Jose Iturbi, a close friend of Jean Dalrymple's]. He goes on to mention New York City's famous 21 Club and his forthcoming birthday" "Thanks for sending me the invitation for '21'. That is quite a bit of competition. I'm glad you are coming to my party." Mentioning that, he too, stayed home for Christmas, he suggests that Jean should bring Jose Iturbi to his party and wishes her luck on her "new book" [Dalrymple published "From the Past Row: A Personal Account of the First Twenty-Five Years of the New York City Center of Music and Drama" in that year]. Laemmle signs with his familiar name "Junior" in his shaky aging hand. Folded for mailing, else fine. In a promotional piece for a Universal Pictures retrospective, the Museum of Modern Art writes: "Founded in 1912 by German immigrant Carl Laemmle.this series focuses on one segment of the studio's rich history - the period from 1928 to 1936, when the studio's head of production was the founder's son, Carl Laemmle, Jr. Known condescendingly as 'Junior' Laemmle and the butt of endless Hollywood jokes ('the son also rises'), the younger Laemmle was in fact a sophisticated, ambitious, risk-taking producer, who gambled the studio's finances on a series of challenging projects - and eventually lost. When cost overruns on the 1936 Show Boat forced the studio into the hands of its creditors, the Laemmle era came to an end. Brief as it was, that era yielded an extraordinary number of important films, including such celebrated classics as Dracula, Frankenstein, and All Quiet on the Western Front."The recipient Jean Dalrymple (1902-1998) was the dynamic producer and director of theater and light-opera at Manhattan's City Center. Dalrymple began her career in vaudeville, appearing with James Cagney and Cary Grant in the early 1930s. She was a founding member of the American Theatre Wing, the theatre service organization. She worked over the years as a personal manager for the likes of Leopold Stokowski, Mary Martin, Jose Iturbi, Andre Kostelanetz, Nathan Milstein, and Lily Pons. She began her work at City Center with its founding in 1943, serving as a board member and publicist.
