This third edition is much enlarged from the second of 1827. Jermyn (1788-1848) grew up in Ipswich and was mentored by Britain's pre-eminent entomologist, William Kirby, who lived nearby (he is the dedicatee of the Butterfly Collector's Vade Mecum). The recipient, the amateur naturalist William Barnard Clarke, was also based in the area and took an active role in local scientific societies. In 1846, he was appointed the first curator of the Ipswich Museum, newly founded by Kirby. Clarke's bookplate faces Jermyn's inscription. Small octavo.
