Lamartine quotes a note that he published in his own oppositional journal for the département Saône-et-Loire, "Le Bien public", addressing his "reservations against the contract" that his "acquirers have made concerning the Histoire des Girondins". Lamartine accuses these acquirers to have unrightfully sold the publishing rights to his work to La Presse and expresses his hope that the problem will be resolved between him and Girardin: "Je ne puis renoncer pour eux au seul et très légitime moyen que j'aye de me libérer de charges énormes : la vente par souscription de l'ouvrage le plus important le plus étudié, et le plus volumineux de tous mes ouvrages.
