Paperback. Condizione: New. First published in 1981, this book is about how the brain controls the behaviour of lower vertebrates. It concentrates on teleosts and amphibians as these are the classes about which most is known. The literature dealing with mammalian brain mechanisms of behaviour is extensive and this book starts to fill the gaps in our knowledge of vertebrate brain behaviour so that the multidisciplinary, comparative approach will be better understood. The text deals with selected topics from five major areas of interest, commencing with the evolution of lower vertebrate brain structure in relation to function. Subsequent sections look at the way sensory information is processed, how sleep, arousal and wakefulness and the level of attention and appetite in lower vertebrates are studies and, finally, how experience may modify the behaviour of these animals. The book combines an introduction to comparative neurothology with specialised topics in which advances have been made. The book will interest students and research workers in neurobiology and animal behaviour.…

Hardcover. Condizione: As New. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fine. First Edition. A comprehensive academic text that explores how the central nervous system controls the behavior of ectothermic (cold-blooded) vertebrates. The book serves to bridge the gap between extensive mammalian research and the understudied neurobiology of lower vertebrates. It primarily focuses on teleost fish and amphibians, the two classes about which the most neurobiological data was available at the time. It is a foundational text in comparative neuroethology. Its significance lies in bridging the gap between extensive mammalian brain studies and our understanding of lower vertebrates (primarily fish and amphibians), providing crucial insights into the evolutionary roots of brain structure, sensory processing, and behavioral modification.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - In mammals the glial (or glue) cells contribute some 50% of the volume of the brain. In contrast to the traditional view that they have a purely physically supportive role, research in the last three decades has shown that glia interact morphologically, biochemically and physiologically with neurons during changes in behaviour. The evidence suggests that glia may modulate neuronal activity and thereby influence behaviour. This 1998 book was the first to describe and discuss these neuronal-glial interactions in relation to behaviour. A distinguished set of authors discuss these interactions from a number of viewpoints, and the book will familiarise neuroscientists, zoologists, physiologists and psychologists with the new knowledge of how neurons and glial cells interact with each other to affect behaviour.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - In the course of almost 40 years various researchers, at what used to be TNO's Forest Products Research Institute, currently the TNO Centre for Timber Research, conducted studies into the physical properties of wood. The first studies and calculations were carried out by Mr E. Prochaska, after which Mrs G.M.C. Koning-Vrolijk continued the work. Indeed Mrs Koning-Vrolijk wrote the Institute's first publication (1962), an Eng lish version of which was published in 1963 (3) on the occasion of FAO and IUFRO Conferences held in the United States. Thereafter, the Institute's work was carried on by Mr A. Govers, Mr J.F. Rijsdijk and Mr P.B. Laming. Their research resulted in a second publication (Laming 1978) in which not only the mechanical properties but also the physical properties of 48 wood species were described. During the bulk of this period technical support was provided by Mr J.C. Verwijs and more recently by Mr L. van Brussel. After extensive studies, the Belgian Timber Information Institute also adopted the same research methods as TNO in order to obtain physical data on a number of wood species which were of commercial interest to the Belgian market but which had not been covered in TNO's studies. The Belgian Timber Information Institute's suggestion to include their research results, on a total of 17 wood species in this publication, .was therefore gratefully accepted. …
