Hardcover. Condizione: Good. Reprint Edition . A nice-looking lot of different editions of the Persian Sufi poet's best-loved, classic epic poem, many being illustrated beautifully and by a range of different artists, and published in multiple formats. The poet, Omar Khayyam (or Khayyami) was born, likely at Nishapur, in the Persian northeast, somewhere between about 1025 and 1050 A.D. His surname "Khayyam" means "tent-maker" in Persian, which might, like St. Paul/Saul, have denoted his father's vocation and major income-source. The lot is comprised of the following: 1) Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, London, England: George Harrap & Co., n.d. A particularly handsome volume, short quarto in size, measuring 11 5/8" by 8 1/2" tall and wide, respectively, bound in crushed burgundy suede over boards in a Yapp binding, and fine gilt-stamped lettering and illustration to front cover. Burgundy silk linen ribbon bookmark sewn in. Clean, unmarked interior. Printed by Brooks-Day & Son, Ltd., lithographers. Housed in a sturdy, if unlovely, paper-illustrated, Good condition clamshell box, paper title-label affixed neatly to bottom. Illustrated endpapers front and rear. Sumptuous tipped-in illustrations by Willy Pogany throughout. Unpaginated; 2) Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, New York: Grosset & Dunlap, 1956. Bound in short quarto hardcover format, measuring 11 1/4" x 8 1/2" tall and wide, respectively. Illustrated beautifully by Sarkis Katchadourian and printed in offset lithography and in full color. 137 pp.; 3) The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, published by South Brunswick, distributed in New York by A.S. Barnes and in London by Thomas Yoseloff, Ltd., in 1965. Near Fine condition white cloth over boards, brief vertical dent to front board, else clean and unmarked of interior. Tall octavo hardcover format, 10 1/2" by 6 3/4" all and wide, respectively. Easily Good condition paper dust wrapper, lightly soiled, edge-wear along top. Brilliant, modern, erotic illustrations by J. Yung Bateman in black-and-white and full-color, all bosomy and sexy. 34 [1] pp. 4) Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, and the Salaman and Absal of Jami, published in New York by Thomas Crowell, n.d. An uncommonly pretty little, stout, short octavo volume measuring 7 1/2" by 5 1/4" tall and wide, respectively; 5) Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, the astronomer-poet of Persia, Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1890, a reprint of the 16th American edition. Handsomely bound in brown cloth over boards, blind-stamped ruling and designs and brilliant gilt-stamped lettering and design to front cover. Scuffing to spine head and foot, else clean and unmarked. Red-ruled page borders, bright appearance, full set of notes; 77 [1] pp.; 6) Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, New York: Thomas Y. Crowell & Co., undated. Bound handsomely in brown suede cloth, with sharp and distinct gilt lettering to front cover. Plentiful tipped-in illustrations, including at frontis, and with decorated endpapers front and rear. Lightly toned interior, 92 pp.; 7) Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, and the Salaman and Absal of Jami, New York: Thomas Y. Crowell & Co., undated. Fine, pretty cloth binding so as to resembled a jeweled exterior, pink and blue and raspberry pastel colors in pebbly fashion. Fine black-and-white portrait of FitzGerald at frontis. Gilt-edges all around, decorated endpapers front and rear. Comprised of Biographical Preface, Epilogue by Alfred, Lord Tennyson, to FitzGerald, long essay, Omar Khayyam, the astronomer-poet of Persia, Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, of Naishapur, 5th Edition, Notes, Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, 1st edition, Note, by W. Aldis Wright, editor, Variations Between Second, Third and Fourth editions, Comparative Table of Stanzas in the Four Editions. All in, a particularly handsome little tome. 288 pp.; 8) The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, published in Philadelphia by Henry Altemus, n.d. Cute little, mass market paperback-sized hardcover exemplar, bound in a fine gray cloth over boards, gilt-stamped ruling and borders, letter, with a pasted-on fine full illustration, inset, of a seeming four-story town with a canal and boats (?). Easily Very Good condition, with light bumping to, scuffing of spine head and foot, light toning to pastedowns front and rear, erased pencil-tickings. xiii, [1], 5-193 pp. of text, then another 30 pp. of other Altemus titles.
