Die wiederholte Titelvignette zeigt einen Pelikan auf seinem Nest mit Jungvögeln unter der Devise "Trouw moet blyken" (Treue muß sich erweisen). - Der niederländische Dichter u. Dramatiker Pieter Langendijk (683-1756) leitete die Haarlemer Rhetoriker-Kammer Trou Moet Blycken (Blijcken) u. wurde 1722 zum "stadsartiest" (etwa Stadtschreiber) ernannt. Seine Aufgabe bestand u.a. darin, jährlich eine hymnische Dichtung mit historischem Bezug zu verfassen. Als Inspiration dienten ihm dabei die historischen Porträts der Grafen im großen des Haarlemer Rathaussaal.(Wilpert, Lex. d. Weltlit., S. 930). - Einband angestaubt u. fleckig; Vorsätze stärker stockfl. und (wie einige wenige Bll.) mit Randläsuren, Papier tls. stock- u. fingerfleckig. Trotz des bedauernswürdigen Zustands noch immer ein beredtes Beispiel barocker Hymnik auf "großem" Papier.…

Unpaginated, but 92 leaves, with an illustration covering about two-thirds of every recto, for a total of 92 illustrations of lives of the early Christians, with plenty of gore, torture, and gladiatorial action to make the blood curdle and speak to those with an aversion for the purely devotional. The imagery is well within the tradition of high Dutch Baroque and in this, transcends the subject matter or not infrequently, ties in the subject matter with contemporary Dutch life. Not in Brunet or Landwehr. Some occasional light foxing but mostly clean. Tight. Calf boards appear to have had a coat of shellac or the like slapped on at some point, rendering an appearance not unlike plywood. Spine has dryness and rubbing along joints. De delen 3 en 4, bij Bosch verschenen, vermelden als jaar van publicatie 1751 en 1760Pieter Langendijk (Haarlem, 25 juli 1683 ? aldaar, 9 of 18 juli 1756) was een Nederlands toneelschrijver en dichter. Hij is de bekendste Nederlandse toneelschrijver uit de 18e eeuw, die in de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse literatuur verder weinig schrijvers die nog steeds bekend zijn, heeft voortgebracht.Rond 1708 volgde Langendijk een opleiding in tekenen en schilderen, samen met Frans van Steenwijk. In 1711 verscheen zijn eerste toneelstuk, Don Quichot op de Bruiloft van Kamacho. Dit bleek een groot succes en werd een vast nummer in de Schouwburg van Van Campen. In de negentiende eeuw vertolkten Frits Rosenveldt en zijn zoon Louis regelmatig de rol van Sancho Panza in dit stuk. De kluchten De zwetser en zijn allerbekendst geworden werk, Het wederzijds huwelijksbedrog, verschenen in de daaropvolgende jaren.Langendijk schreef nog meer komedies in de trant van Molière, die hij vertaalde of bewerkte. Samen met Hermanus Angelkot schreef hij Cato. Het stuk werd opgedragen op de oud-burgemeester Nicolaes Witsen. Zeer beroemd werd Quincampoix of de Windhandelaars, geschreven in het beruchte jaar 1720 toen John Law in Parijs veel speculanten ruïneerde. Arlequin Actionist is een commedia dell'arte-klucht over de windhandel, bestaande uit slechts één akte, met een heuse vechtpartij, dans en muziek.Langendijk besteedde veel aandacht aan de vorm: hij schreef stukken van vijf bedrijven met vergelijkbare lengte, waarin de symmetrie een rol speelde. Met een expositie, intrige en crisis, respecteerde hij de eenheden van tijd, plaats en handeling. Deze classicistische vorm gebruikte hij om de burgerij een spiegel voor te houden. Nergens wordt de toon moraliserend, maar toch gaat het duidelijk om zedenblijspelen (comédies de moeurs).
