Im Sinne des kritischen Personalismus können Befunde der modernen Hirnforschung mit alten pädagogischen Einsichten erneut in Einklang gebracht werden. Dass man Vernunftprinzipien (Wahrheit, Richtigkeit, Freiheit etc.) überhaupt anwendet und auf seinen konkreten Willen im Sinne von Entschlussfähigkeiten bezieht, dazu bedarf es - und das haben Kant, Hegel und Dilthey noch nicht bedacht - eines (zuweilen auch vorrationalen) Willens zur Vernunft (Patzig). Von daher ist der Willensbereich das Zentrum der Pädagogik des Geistes, die im Anschluss an Petzelt und Spranger heute davon ausgeht, dass ohne Willen auch im Gehirn nicht viel geht, weder bei der Moralentfaltung, noch bei der Wertebildung und auch beim Denken und Urteilen nicht. Unser Geist, was immer er als Inbegriff eines Vermögens in Wirklichkeit auch sein mag, läge ohne Willen nahezu völlig brach - eine These, die auch von heutigen Neurologen (z. B. Beide «Ismen» bleiben jedoch zwei konträren Subjektmodell…en (determiniertes vs. intentionales) verhaftet und setzen deshalb entweder zu tief in der Natur oder zu hoch bei der Freiheit an. So können der Grundgedanke der Pädagogik als «Personwerden» entwickelt, seine Eigenständigkeit begründet und Gesetzmäßigkeiten der Natur und der sozialen Welt mit alten pädagogischen Einsichten in die freie und vernünftige Selbstbestimmung vereinbart werden.
