Nachdem sein Arbeitgeber als Soldat im Ersten Weltkrieg gefallen war, übernahm er dessen Fotofachgeschäft.Sommer hielt die Belle Époque sowie die bewegte und schwierige Zeit bis nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg fest. Neben dem Ferien- und Sportbetrieb der Gäste und dem Alltag der Einheimischen fotografierte er Landschaft und Dörfer und betätigte sich als Chronist des örtlichen Brauchtums. Die Aufnahmen haben einen einmaligen kulturgeschichtlichen und dokumentarischen Wert.Gustav Sommer hinterließ über 40 000 Negativplatten. Das Kulturarchiv Oberengadin hat diese erworben und archiviert. Die Autoren und Nachkommen des Fotografen präsentieren im vorliegenden Buch sein umfangreiches Werk. Libro.
