Victor Largeau (Niort 1840 - 1897) fut un explorateur qui fit deux tentatives de traversée du Sahara. Il écrivit "Le Sahara" en 1870, puis le "Le pays de Rirha - Ouargla - Voyage à Rhadamès" en 1879. Il voulait faire en sorte que les caravanes venant du Soudan aillent vers l'Algérie plutôt que vers le Maroc ou la Tripolititaine. Son fils, militaire lui succédera dans cet intérêt pour la terre Saharienne : il aura un rôle décisif dans la colonisation du Tchad.
