The Chuvash are a Turkic-speaking people from the Volga region of Russia, and Vikára Hungarian ethnomusicologistdocumented their songs in the 20th century as part of his extensive research on the musical traditions of Finno-Ugric and Turkic peoples. The collection includes: work, wedding, dance, and ritual songs; melodies with original Chuvash lyrics, often with German or English translations; musical notations showing typical Chuvash tonal structures, rhythms, and vocal forms; and accompanying commentary on cultural context, performance practice, and regional variations. The songs reflect themes such as nature, community, love, work and spirituality, thus preserving a piece of the oral tradition and identity of the Chuvash people.
