William Law (1686-1761) was a highly influential 18th-century English Anglican priest, mystic, and devotional writer, best known for his work A Serious Call to a Devout and Holy Life (1729). As a non-juror who refused to pledge allegiance to King George I, he lost his fellowship at Cambridge and spent much of his life writing and acting as a spiritual guide. This book contains two of his works: I-An Earnest and Serious Answer to Dr Trapp's Discourse of the Folly, Inland Danger of Being Righteous Over-much; AND II-An Appeal to All That Doubt, Or Disbelieve the Truths of the Gospel. 209pp.Green cloth boards with gilt lettering to spine. Light shelf-wear to extremities. Lower corners have been affected by damp some time ago.

Grey-green endpapers. Front board detached; boards a little marked and rubbed all round edges, chipping with minor loss at spine ends. Front free endpaper partially detached, else text block is neat, clean, bright and tight barring previous owner's name and a little spotting on prelims. 8vo. Best suited for restoration or rebinding. Law's classic work on Christian morality and life, together with a biographical note on Law by the eminent historian Edward Gibbon, best know for his History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire.

Internally, library number and barcode on verso of title page, no other library marks, minor stain mark to edge of frontsi. Pages and plates in very good clean condition. A very nice copy. Size: Quarto.

Twentieth edition, 8vo, xvi, 432 pp. Frontispiece portrait of Samuel Johnson with light foxing, with a quote from Boswell's "Life" concerning this title below, later 19th century inscription and a 20th century's owner's ink stamp to paste down. Contemporary half morocco, marbled sides, corners slightly worn, rebacked retaining most of the original faded backstrip.
