Final charges may vary depending on size and weight. Joseph McPherson was a classical scholar with an Oxford degree in Natural Sciences, a linguist, athlete and determined individualist, arrived in Egypt in 1901. He fell in love with the country, its people and customs and stayed there until his death in 1946. In his preface, Lawrence Durrell writes, "The author of this book which has been distilled from some twenty five volumes of his correspondence covering a long and various life in Egypt was one of the most singular and captivating personages it has been my fortune to encounter. Of McPherson himself it is hard to write in a way that does justice to his many-sided personality. But one saw him, as somebody said, 'ambling about Cairo on a white mule lost in thought and looking like 'God the Father'. He gave off the most extraordinary scent of human grace; had he wandered into Tibet he would at once have been recognised as a lama of superior attainments. He was of medium height and slightly built with a small and beautiful head which housed eyes of extraordinary luminosity and smiling kindness. He had a way of sitting passively in the oriental manner which was as eloquent as a whole speech. The Egyptians loved him and thought of him as some sort of seer, though his sense of humour and witty turns of phrase made him seem more approachable than the ordinary holy man. He carried out his modest functions with a delightful good grace and warmth which won all hearts. And of course the amazing thing was that as well as all this we had to do with a fine scholar, accomplished linguist, as well as a bon viveur and man of action. His long life covered a whole period of transition as well as two wars; when he arrived in Cairo the population was only 400,000. When he died it was over two million and still growing. Something of these great changes reflect themselves in his observations.".
