The two had a long friendship and association, probably stretching back to childhood, as they were nearly the same age and both attended the same high school -- DeWitt Clinton -…- among other things. Photographs of the two together are easy to find on the internet. The inscription, written in red ink on the top of the title page, "For Paddy -- 1/6/6 (the next digit is entirely lost To my stalwart Honorable Opposition -- Love, Seymour." We think the inscription is a rather good iinscription, brief though it is, as it sheds a ray of light on the two writers' relationship, suggesting a certain amicable combativeness, not entirely surprising given Chayefsky's deserved reputation for being a contrarian. The book itself has heavily browned and brittle pages, as typical, even inevitable, for the cheap softbound book. There is a chipped sliver on the front cover, and first prelim leaf is detached. Signed.
