He was also a French politician and was a deputy to the Estates General of 1789. [King Louis XVI summoned the three Estates (the Clergy, the Nobility, and the Commoners) to address financial reforms of the Kingdom. When the Estates General ended, a National Assembly was created mostly by the Third Estate along with some members of the other two estates. This triggered the beginning of the French Revolution]. Saint-Domingue (now Santo-Domingo) was largely populated by slaves who serviced the sugar, indigo, and coffee plantations. In 1791 there was a slave uprising around Cap-Francois, the main commercial and cultural center. This was near where Columbus had founded his first settlement. Slavery was abolished in 1793, and the French ceded control in 1803, leading to the creation of Haiti.
