Deuxi…ème édition, la première illustrée, de ce poème facétieux écrit en 1838 et resté quasi inédit. L'auteur, Alexandre Le Noble (1800-1860), né à Paris, élève des ateliers de Gros et de Girodet puis professeur de dessin, mort au collège de Cherbourg, avait composé cette "gauloiserie" pour ses seuls camarades d'atelier ; le premier tirage de 1838, à très petit nombre, la fit longtemps considérer comme perdue, de sorte que cette réédition put passer pour une oeuvre inédite. Une notice bio-bibliographique signée J. B. ouvre le volume. En sept chants d'une verve rabelaisienne, le poème chante l'atelier de peinture comme "séjour de plaisir", les farces des rapins, ces Raphaël en herbe partagés entre l'étude et la blague, et toute la mythologie joyeuse de la bohème artistique parisienne d'avant 1860, avant que les impressionnistes ne désertent l'atelier pour peindre sur le motif. L'ouvrage marque surtout les débuts dans le livre illustré d'Henry Somm (François-Clément Sommier, 1844-1907), dessinateur humoristique et japoniste, futur collaborateur du Chat Noir : il l'orne d'un frontispice, de sept eaux-fortes hors texte et sept vignettes gravées dans le texte, plus dix en-têtes et culs-de-lampe sur bois, d'un esprit bouffon et échevelé. Le tirage fut limité à 502 exemplaires numérotés, le présent exemplaire porte le n° 7 du tirage principal sur vergé. Séduisant exemplaire en demi-maroquin aubergine. Second edition, first illustrated, of this facetious poem written in 1838 and virtually unpublished. Alexandre Le Noble (1800-1860), pupil of Gros and Girodet and later a drawing master, wrote this Rabelaisian squib for his studio friends; the tiny 1838 printing made it pass for an unpublished work. In seven cantos it celebrates the Parisian painter's studio and the pranks of the "rapins" (art students) of the bohème before 1860. It is the first illustrated book by Henry Somm (François-Clément Sommier, 1844-1907), the humorous draughtsman and japoniste later of the Chat Noir, with a frontispiece, 7 etched plates, 7 in-text etched vignettes and 10 woodcut head- and tailpieces. Edition limited to 502 numbered copies, this copy is no. 7, on laid paper. An attractive copy in half aubergine morocco, binding lightly rubbed, minor defects, good overall.
