Ihre Heimat ist das nördliche Frankreich, das Gebiet jenseits der geographischen Linie, die am Nordrand von Dauphin& Auvergne, Limousin und Perigord verläuft und die Frankreich in zwei sprachlich gesonderte Gebiete teilt, die man nach der verschiedenen Form der Bejahungspartikel bezeichnet. Das nördliche Gebiet ist das Gebiet der langue doll (aus lateinisch hoc ille, französisch oui), das südliche das der langue d'oc (aus lateinisch hoc). Die Gedichte sind in drei Gruppen geordnet, die jeweils einen Stand der lyrischen Entwicklung darstellen. Die beiden ersten Gruppen enthalten schlichte Liebeslieder, wie sie überall am Anfang der Lyrik stehen: Tanzlied, Romanze, Frauenlied, Pastourelle und Tagelied; die Strophen enden meist mit einem Refrain. Sie sind ausschließlich anonym auf uns gekommen und gehören zum kostbaren ' Bestand früher Lyrik, den Nordfrankreich dem Süden voraushat. Bekannte Dichter haben sich später auch in diesen Gattungen geübt; einige ihrer Pastourellen und Tagelieder sind daher mit Recht den namenlosen Stücken beigegeben. Die dritte Gruppe verzeichnet Lieder der Trouveres. Mit ihnen begann in der Jahrhundertmitte und nun durch Einfluß aus dem Süden der nordfranzösische Minnesang. Wir beschränken uns dabei auf die älteste Dichtergeneration. Sie bewahrte in ihren Liedern das aus der Provence übernommene Ideal der höfischen Liebe am reinsten und führte, in Kenntnis der schon vorhandenen Melodien einheimischer Lieder, die chanson d'amour, das Minnelied, inhaltlich und musikalisch in Nordfrankreich zu einer ersten Vollendung. Seit 1200 wurden dann neben den Höfen die Städte zu Trägern der Kultur; in bürgerlicher Umgebung wandelte sich auch der Minnesang und verlor mehr und mehr seinen klassischen höfischen Charakter.
