Sie flohen vor dem nationalsozialistischen Terror nach Amsterdam, tauchten nach dem deutschen Überfall auf die Niederlande in Alkmaar unter. Nach Kriegsende begannen sie in Amsterdam…'ein zweites Leben'. Diese Geschichte steht exemplarisch für den Lebensweg vieler deutscher Juden, die um die Jahrhundertwende geboren wurden und die Gräuel des Nationalsozialismus erlitten. Das Buch gewährt den Lesern einen tiefen Einblick in das Leben und Empfinden der deutschen Juden in der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts. Der Text macht deutlich, wie 'normal' ihr Leben war - und lässt die Unfassbarkeit ahnen, plötzlich ausgesondert und für lebensunwert erklärt zu werden. Sie hatten selbstverständlich am politischen, kulturellen und gesellschaftlichen Leben im Kaiserreich und der Weimarer Republik teilgenommen. Vor und nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg mussten sie antisemitische Anfeindungen erdulden, ohne sich dadurch in ihrer Lebensführung beirren zu lassen. Daran hielten sie auch nach der Machtergreifung der Nationalsozialisten für lange Jahre fest. Verfolgt in einem Land, dem sie sich patriotisch verbunden fühlten, bewahrten sich viele wie Herbert Lebram die Hoffnung, 'dass die Diktatur gestürzt und alle Unmenschlichkeit verschwinden würde'. Insbesondere für jüngere Generationen aber hält Herbert Lebram eine ganz persönliche Lehre bereit, die durch seine Erfahrung beglaubigt ist: Wer in Erinnerung rufen will, was durch die Schrecken der Geschichte verloren ging, muss zunächst den Schrecken der Geschichte selbst in Erinnerung rufen. Herbert Lebram unternahm den Versuch, das Verlorene - seine 'deutschen Wurzeln', zu denen er sich auch nach dem Krieg bekannte - zurückzurufen, das Verlorene unter den Trümmern der Geschichte freizulegen. Dies war ihm nur möglich, indem er noch einmal den schmerzhaften und schrecklichen Verlust durchlebte, den er durch den Terror der Nazis erlitt. Der Bruch in der deutschen Geschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts wird am Beispiel Herbert Lebrams auf eindringliche Weise lebendig.
