Sinds de Tweede Wereldoorlog hebben vier directeuren het verzamelbeleid in het Van Abbemuseum te Eindhoven bepaald: Edy de Wilde (1946-1963), Jean Leering (1964-1973), Rudi Fuchs (1975-1987) en jan Debbaut (vanaf 1988). In Een collectie is ook maar een mens vertellen deze vier directeuren welke verzamelkeuzes zij gemaakt hebben en vooral welke overwegingen, gedachten, contacten en onderhandelingen daarbij een rol hebben gespeeld. Uit de gesprekken blijkt hoezeer elke directeur zich verbonden voelt met de kunst en de kunstenaars van zijn generatie en met de artistieke vernieuwingen die het aanzien van de kunst voortdurend veranderen. In de verhalen komen niet alleen de successen, maar ook de gemiste kansen en onmogelijkheden ter sprake. Daarnaast geven de interviews een goed beeld van de omgang met kunstenaars, verzamelaars, conservatoren, het kunstbedrijf en de (lokale) politiek. Tussen de regels en soms expliciet wordt een beeld geboden van veranderingen in het artistieke denken door de tijd heen en van, soms controversi le, opvattingen over de veranderde rol van het museum. 210 g.
