"Durch die lokalen Epidemien sogenannter spinaler Kinderlähmung, die sich…in den Jahren 1908 und 1909 in einzelnen Kronländern Österreichs ereigneten, wurde die neuerliche Bearbeitung dieser in vielen Beziehungen noch ungeklärten Erkrankung angeregt. Für das Kronland Niederösterreich wurde von der pädiatrischen Sektion der Gesellschaft für innere Medizin und Kinderheilkunde in Wien eine Sammelforschung eingeleitet, die lediglich klinisch-epidemiologische Studien verfolgte. Anderseits wurde im pathologisch-anatomischen Institute der Universität in Wien die ätiologische und anatomische Erforschung dieser Krankheit unternommen, die durch die materielle Unterstützung der Kaiserlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften in Wien und des k. k. Ministeriums des Innern ermöglicht wurde. Die Ergebnisse dieser nach verschiedenen Richtungen getrennt betriebenen Forschungen sollen nun in der vorliegenden Monographie vereinigt und damit ein Überblick über den derzeitigen Stand der gesamten Pathologie der Poliomyelitis acuta gegeben werden. Aus der Reihe der verschiedenen vorgeschlagenen und zum Teil verwendeten Benennungen haben wir für unsere Arbeit die Bezeichnungen Heine-Medinsche Krankheit auf Grund klinischer Überlegungen, Poliomyelitis acuta auf Grund der anatomischen und experimentellen Erfahrungen als die derzeit geeignetsten gewählt. Wenn wohl auch gegen den Gebrauch der Bezeichnung akute Kinderlähmung keine Bedenken bestehen, so sind solche gegen die meisten anderen Nomenklaturversuche von den verschiedenen Gesichtspunkten aus geltend zu machen, worauf wir im Texte nochmals zu sprechen kommen werden."
