A companion reader to the Materiality exhibition, it brings together curatorial essays and contributions addressing the status of objects, materials and physical processes in contemporary thought. The book assembles theoretical and critical texts that collectively argue for a fundamental reorientation in how we think about the physical world. The overarching question running through the volume is deceptively simple: what do materials do? Not what they are, nor what we make of them, but what they themselves enact, perform, and produce - in social life, in political structures, in bodies, in buildings, and in the accumulated waste of late capitalist consumption. Four curatorial statements frame the collection, each approaching the question from a different angle - living systems, daily practice, performativity and emotional attachment to things. The texts that follow move from philosophical arguments about the hidden power of ordinary objects, through the ways materials shape architecture, industrial labour and the human body, to the darker territory of waste, excess and what happens when production outstrips any possible use. The final section takes its title from Guy Debord's 1978 film In girum imus nocte et consumimur igni, a Latin palindrome traditionally translated as 'we go round and round in the night and are consumed by fire' and said to describe the behaviour of moths circling a flame - a fitting image for the restless cycles of consumption and entropy that close the volume. What holds these threads together is a refusal to treat the physical world as merely raw stuff awaiting human purpose. Instead, the contributors insist that materials push back: they resist, decay, accumulate and force consequences that no designer or policy-maker intended. The setting of the exhibition - a disused shipyard hall where industrial ruin, ecological change and artistic work overlap - gave this argument a concrete, visible anchor.
