A fish jumps and sends a cascade of ripples moving ever outward. So Angela Lemaire's imagery, cut in wood sometimes with great delicacy, sometimes more roughly hewn, reflects the the intricacies of the 'curiosities' and 'singularities' of Secret Commonwealth. Seventeenth century Scotland was still unsure of the relationship between church and the older beliefs which included second-sight and faery. Nothing Victorian and pretty here, but the attempts to understand the supernatural involved in the underground world which has its own laws of nature. Fertility was inexplicably from below. Pre-historic chamber tombs were intertwined with fairy hills. The shadows in the darkness became people walking beside you -- some with good intent, some not. The book seeks to explore these worlds in imagery and text. Robert Kirk's text is one of the most important ever written on the subject and Angela Lemaire's Afterword puts the work into context . . . while her woodcut images brilliantly achieve the logically almost impossible task of showing, or half-showing, something which seems only half there, or is not there at all! Fifty years ago Benjamin Britten wrote Noye s Fludde an opera-for-all telling the story of Noah s Ark with the main characters taken by adult opera singers alongside children playing animals, involving instrumentalists at all levels of ability and including hymns for all present to join in with. It was a tremendously popular work and is still widely performed.In 1974 the head of Pimlico School in London, Kathleen Mitchell, asked Britten to write another such opera for performance at the school. The composer went to the same source, the Chester Mystery Cycle and selected scenes for a Christmas Sequence which would again afford opportunities for collaboration between professional musicians and schoolchildren.Dr Andrew Plant, until recently in charge of the Library, warmed to our idea of the work coming to life as a book filled with images as evocative as the music would have been. He writes an introduction to establish the story and then Angela Lemaire has cut magnificent woodblocks which capture a splendid sense of the medieval play, its presentation by contemporary children and a mystical rendering of the events surrounding the birth of Jesus. The scenes included involve the Salutation which introduces Gabriel, Mary and Joseph, Elizabeth and midwives who arrive for the birth; The Shepherds; the Magi; Herod and the Innocents and the knights who carry out the orders to kill. While wandering alone in the forest lands of Melrose Abbey, Roxburghshire, Thomas saw a beautiful lady riding on a palfrey. He took her to be the Queen of Heaven. She denies it and tells him she is from 'another country'. She is, rather, the Queen of the Fairies.There follows an otherworld journey which he related in a visionary poem that has come down to us in various ballad forms and also in several romance-prophecies dating from the fifteenth century. A later version of one of these is the text used here as we follow Thomas's request for love, their eventual love-making and many adventures before they have to part at the Eildon Tree - but not before the Lady has given him the gift of truth, after which he is known as True Thomas. There are some stories that have been re-told so often in different contexts that it is refreshing to go back to the earliest version to try to recapture the contemporary mood. Angela Lemaire's visual imagination is stirred by such exploration - her lyrical lines in large wood and lino cuts move us to follow her Pyed Pyper, whom she invests with symbolic power far beyond that of a simple musician. Richard Verstegan was the first (1634) to tell the story in English, of how Hamelin was freed from rats by the playing of a piper; but the Town Council's refusal to keep to their agreement to pay uses forceful language matched by a stern, forbidding, hostile group of dark figures. No more the summery piper freeing the town but an entrancing being who transfixes the townspeople while the children dance to his tunes into the surrounding hills. As the sun sets the evening sky aflame, the children disappear into enfolding dark green shadows, never to be seen again. Here, the delicate relationship between the people, the land, the elements and the seasons demonstrate the need for respect one for the other. Fascinated by the occult and the supernatural and Freemasonry, his poetry ranged over subjects which earned him a reputation of being mad.The Jubilate Agno is an edition of Kit Smart s wild and wonderful hymn of yearning and adoration for Creation in all its multifarious detail. It expresses his exuberance and overflows with his enthusiasms and blessings. He began writing this work in 1759 when his wild behaviour (which now we might call a nervous breakdown) had caused him to be locked up in St Luke s Hospital for the Insane. In his praise of all Creation he lists people, animals, birds, insects, fish, all of whom are blessed.His knowledge of the natural world is encyclopaedic and nothing is omitted! A section of it provides the text for Benjamin Britten s Rejoice in the Lamb - a cantata which will be familiar to many if only for the music about my cat Jeoffry . Angela Lemaire writes that she sees Smart, in one particular woodcut in the book, as a singing bird glimpsed through the obstructing branches of a tree. She expands on this: He has played with sounds and rhymes and rhythms and through this he has found unseen forces and told us about them and quotes Smart: For in my nature I quested for beauty, but God, God hath sent me to sea for pearls . . . For my talent is to give an Impression upon words by punching, that when the reader casts his eye upon em, he takes up the image from the mould I have made. The book came about after a wonderful encounter by us with a copy of the Gutenberg Bible and it can be said that the design, the imagery, the palette of rich colours were all influenced strongly by that early masterpiece of printing with moveable type which was enhanced by the decorations of scribes.There are woodcuts and linocuts throughout our text, some are printed in more than one colour, some in a single colour; there are initial capitals among the pages arranged in two columns, all to pay tribute to the design of Gutenberg. While still a student at Camberwell College of Art in South London, Angela Lemaire became immersed in Defoe and his description of the Plague of 1665 and of the Fire which followed it, sweeping through the city of London. Meditation upon responses to suffering (especially in passages from the Bible) gave rise to imagery which was physically burned into the plates. Angela also gave a voice to the suffering - in a poem which she printed alongside her etchings and the quotations from the Bible. When we discovered that the plates still existed it seemed inevitable that we should seek to make them available - in a slightly more expanded form - for those who have admired Angela s later work with us. Dr Anthony Dyson - a magnificent etcher himself - is one of those who had expressed appreciation of her printmaking and kindly made exploratory prints from the re-discovered plates. The editioning of the prints for this new presentation of The Plague was undertaken by Martyn Grimmer. Each etching and the additional new woodcut is separately printed, signed & numbered and laid into a folded sheet with the biblical quote which accompanied it in Angela s original version. Dr Dyson has written an appreciation of the work and a description of the excitement of revealing the imagery held within the plates. There is an account by Angela Lemaire of how the work first came about. The unsewn sections are held loosely in a folded portfolio of smokey blue Roma paper handmade by Fabriano in Italy and laid into a dropback box lined with velvet. Lemaire, Angela (illustratore).
