Er entspricht in Phönizien der ausgehenden mittleren und der späten Eisenzeit, also der archaischen und klassischen Zeit in Griechenland. In dieser Zeit ist eine gegenteilige Kulturbewegung von We…st nach Ost zu beobachten. Die hier vorgestellten zyprischen Statuen und Statuetten, die in großer Zahl im phönizischen Quellheiligtum von Amrit geweiht wurden, sind frühe Zeugnisse der neuen Entwicklung, später werden sie durch griechische Skulpturen ergänzt oder ersetzt. / Die Fragen, die man aus heutiger Sicht an die phönizische Kultur stellen kann, lassen sich unter drei Kategorien fassen. Erstens sind die Vielfalt der externen Kulturkontakte der Phönizier und ihre Ausprägungen im internen Bereich zu untersuchen, die unter dem Stichwort des »kulturellen Pluralismus« zusammengefaßt werden. Zweitens ist die Art und Weise der »Akkulturation« dieser verschiedenen Kulturen zu definieren, also der prozessuale Vorgang der Aneignung. Ein dritter wichtiger Aspekt schließlich ist die Frage, wie sich im Rahmen der vielfältigen Einflüsse von außen die »kulturelle Identität« der Phönizier bestimmen lässt.
