Dr. Leo M. Davidoff, Associate Dean, Professor and Chairman, Department of Neurological Surgery"; and (2) Hale Haven's review of Brain Tumors, clipped from the journal Surgery, Gynecology, and Obstetrics, February 1932, p. 256. Leo Davidoff dedicated this book to Harvey Cushing: "Dedicated to My Teacher Doctor Harvey Cushing". In his posthumously-published autobiography entitled "A Tree Not for Myself", Davidoff explains the origin of this, his first book: "During the same period there appeared an advertisement in a medical journal, from a medical society in Rhode Island, offering a prize for a monograph entitled 'Brain Tumors, Their Diagnosis, Treatment, and Prognosis.' I decided to enter the contest; and this was the way in which I wrote my first book [offered here]. There were a dozen or so entries in the contest, and the first prize went to a man named Courville who became the famous neuropathologist on the West Coast; mine was the runner-up. However, the society published only the prize winner's work, and I felt my efforts deserved publication too. I discovered that there was a press at the Utica State Hospital, run largely as an occupational therapy project for patients, which published a quarterly State Journal of Psychiatry; and it was in the Quarterly that my book appeared, in 4 installments which were ultimately published as a collection, and sold for, I believe $1.50 each. This book is now over thirty years old, and of course contains none of the advances in the field of brain tumors that have been made since its publication; yet I still find it useful as an introductory text to the field." Courville's prize-winning work was entitled Intracranial Tumors; Their Pathology, Symptomatology, Diagnosis and Prognosis, and was published in 1931 as the Fiske Fund prize essay of the Rhode Island Medical Society.
