Leonel Edgard da Silveira Franca, S.J. (18931948) nasceu em São Gabriel, no Rio Grande do Sul. Fez os primeiros estudos no Colégio Anchieta, em Nova Friburgo, no Rio de Janeiro, onde viria mais tarde a lecionar. Ingressou na Companhia de Jesus em 1908, e em 1910 iniciou o curso de letras próprio da formação dos jesuítas. Foi para Roma em 1912 para cursar o triênio de filosofia, na Universidade Gregoriana, e voltou para o Rio em 1915 exercer o magistério no Colégio Santo Inácio. Como um prolongamento de suas aulas desta época, publicou seu primeiro e famoso livro Noções de história da filosofia. Tornou a Roma em 1920 para cursar os quatro anos de teologia, sendo ordenado sacerdote em 1923, mesmo ano em que publicou A Igreja, a Reforma e a Civilização. Em 1924 doutorou-se em filosofia e teologia, e no ano seguinte completou a formação jesuítica em Oya, na Espanha. Estabeleceu-se definitivamente no Rio de Janeiro em 1927, onde publicou vários de seus livros, como A crise do mundo moderno e A psicologia da fé.
