The artist was born in 1940 in Chur, Switzerland. In 1962, he moved to Zurich, where he studied architecture and industrial design. Acclaimed as a painter for his Surrealist dreamscapes and unique biomechanical style, Giger achieved international fame with his work on Ridley Scott's movie ALIEN. In 1980, he received the Academy Award for Best Achievement for Visual Effects for his designs of the film's title creature and its otherworldly environment.
