The artist was born in 1940 in Chur, Switzerland. In 1962, he moved to Zurich, where he studied architecture and industrial design. Acclaimed as a painter for his Surrealist dreamscapes and unique biomechanical style, Giger achieved international fame with his work on Ridley Scott's movie ALIEN. In 1980, he received the Academy Award for Best Achievement for Visual Effects for his designs of the film's title creature and its otherworldly environment. Giger's other high-profile film projects include Poltergeist Il, Alien 3 and Species, for which he designed a deadly but beautiful half-extraterrestrial female creature and a fantastic nightmare train. At the present time, the artist is developing his own film project, The Mystery of San Gottardo. Giger's album covers for Debbie Harry's Koo Koo and Emerson, Lake and Palmer's Brain Salad Surgery were placed among the top one hundred in the history of music in Rolling Stone magazine's survey of music journalists. This book was designed by Giger himself, and features detailed commentaries by the artist on his wide-ranging interests, and on his work from the early 60s up to his current projects; the authentic voice of the master.
