Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Poor. First American editions for all 3. This volume is comprised of originally separate American first editions by three separate authors. At some point, the owner decided to have them bound together in 1/2 leather on marbled paper-covered boards. As is often the case with leather bindings of that era, th…e leather has not survived well. The leather spine has deteriorated significantly and has split lengthwise, with large chips missing. The text block has also split, but fortunately there is no loss to any of the pages. The text is foxed, primarily on the first few and last few pages, which is typical of the period. There are six pages of publisher's ads at the rear, apparently retained from the original volume of The Wilmingtons. Despite its poor condition, the book is offered as a restoration candidate. A fan of neglected Victorian authors may consider have the novels rebound individually, given their relative scarcity. The three books are: 1. Roland Cashel describes the life of a young man from Ireland who moves to London to make a living. The story follows his journey as he navigates through the social and political landscape of the city, encountering various characters along the way. The novel offers a glimpse into the cultural and political milieu of the time. Lever's writing style is engaging and witty, and the book is filled with humor, romance, and adventure. Overall, it is a delightful read that offers a unique perspective on life in Victorian England. Charles Lever (1806 - 1872) was an Irish novelist and raconteur, whose novels, according to Anthony Trollope, were just like his conversation. 2, Georgina Hammond, anonymous, but Elizabeth Daniel (1823-1878), the illegitimate daughter of George Spencer-Churchill the fifth Duke of Marlborough, and his mistress Matilda Glover. (Within the text, there is a later ink stamp of T. Glover, which suggests that the volume may have been once owned by some relative of the author.) In 1842, she married journalist and novelist Robert Mackenzie Daniel and the couple had two children. After he became incapacitated by mental illness and died young, she turned to fiction for support, eventually producing two dozen novels. 3. The Wilmingtons, anonymous but Anne Marsh-Caldwell (1791 -1874) was an English novelist, popular during the Victorian Era. Her unmarried name was Anne Caldwell, and from 1817 when she married Arthur Cuthbert Marsh, to 1858, she was known as Anne Marsh. She was one of the most popular British novelists for nearly a quarter of a century. Her first book, Two Old Men's Tales, was made up of two stories, The Deformed and The Admiral's Daughter. Her books were published anonymously and mainly describe life in the upper middle class and the lower ranks of the aristocracy. All three authors were very popular in their time, but have been neglected more recently. First American editions of all three are scarce. NB17.
