Dublin: William Curry, Jun. and Company, [n.d., circa late 1840s or 1850s]. x, [2] pages; pp. [5]-396, plus engraved frontispiece portrait of the author and 26 full-page engraved plates by Phiz. Several woodcuts in the text. Later 19th century half blue calf over marbled boards with raised bands, handsomely gilt spine in six compartments, red leather spine label, marbled endpapers, and all edges marbled. Corners are slightly bumped and leather shows minor rubbing at extremities. Light, mostly marginal foxing to frontispiece; lacking the tissue guard; offsetting from the frontispiece to the title-page. Book is over opened between frontispiece and title, but binding is sound. Many plates with light to moderate foxing, with occasional dark spots. A half dozen leaves with scattered old stains, not affecting legibility (a bit of split tea, were we to guess). Many corners with light reader's creases. Text block is thus good only, however the binding is attractive and better than very good. Later printing. …

Dublin :William Curry, Jun. and Company,1839. First Edition. Octavo (220 x 140 mm), slightly later binding of half calf over green moire silk (lightly rubbed), spine in compartments with gilt decoration and contrasting leather title-piece lettered in gilt; additionalpictorial title-page, pp. xv, [1 blank], [1-3], 4-344; illustrated with 21 plates (including frontispiece); spotting to fore-edge of text block and occasionally to margins; a very good copy in a handsome nineteenth-century binding. First printing in book form of Charles Lever's first book, illustrated by "Phiz" (Hablot Knight Browne). Anthony Trollope once favourably remarked that the stories of Irish novelist and raconteur Charles Lever (1806-1872) sounded exactly like his conversation, although Lever had only turned to writing as an extra source of income while studying medicine. The Confessions of Harry Lorrequerwas originally published inserial form in theDublin University Magazinein 1837-8. After its publication as a book in 1839 was a popular success, Lever published a string of novels, among the first of which wereCharles O'Malley, the Irish dragoon (1841), andJack Hinton, The Guardsmanand Tom Burke of Ours (1843), notable for their realistic descriptions of battle scenes.…
