Hardcover. Condizione: Fair. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fair. First Edition Later Printing. Memoir by the warden of the infamous correctional institution in Ossining, NY, from 1920-1941, who oversaw some 303 executions, but also initiated some daring reforms. Basis for the 1932 movie starring Spencer Tracy & Bette Davis, in 412 pages with black-and-white author photo as frontispiece. Orig. published in 1932, this is a 1933 printing by the same publishers (NOT the later A.L. Burt reprint). Hardcover book with blue cloth-covered boards & black lettering to front & spine is downgraded to Fair due to water damage along outside (fore edge) side of both front & rear boards: does NOT impact interior pages! Other than this aesthetic flaw, the book is very clean, binding tight & square, pages creamy off-white, with modest tanning around edges. Former owner's bookplate inside front cover, partially removed. The unclipped DJ is intact, but missing a large chip at foot of spine; lesser chipping all around. Nicely protected in new archival mylar cover FreeOur photos depict the Exact book you will receive, never "stock" images of books we don't actually have! Same day shipping on all orders received by 2pm weekdays (Pacific time); later orders, weekends, & holidays ship very next business day.…

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. ORIGINAL Vintage 1943 HARDCOVER, VERY GOOD; in ORIGINAL pictorial DUST JACKET, GOOD, with light wear, light chipping to corners, but whole and bright, in new archival sleeve. 412 pp. The author's account of his tenure as a prison guard. Criminal Justice, Legal System, Penal System. American Justice, Crime, Punishment, Law, SOCIAL REFORM, CIVICS, AMERICAN LAW, LEGAL, SOCIAL, public policy in America in the first half of the 20th century.AMERICAN LAW, LEGAL America, Americana, American History. "Warden Lawes showed early interest in PENOLOGY. He lived in Elmira, NY near the NYState boys Reformatory, and would watch the 'bad' boys working around the school, and their weekend exercising and Band playing. They looked neat, clean, they laughed and talked with each other, and did not appear 'bad'. Lewis Lawes apprenticed at several Reformatories and prisons around the State beginnning in the early 1900's. In 1915 he was given the job as overseer of NYC Reformatory for men. It was eventually called the Prison without Walls. When asked to define it he said "We have morale. It's more effective than your strongest walls" Now this was still in the early 1900's. Warden Lawes had prison inmates guarding his home and family, consisting of his wife and 2 daughters. The 'guards' slept in the cellar. From the start on his new Job at the Reformatory he instituted the Honor System. Unknown in most other institutions. In another extraordinary experiment - a film company - this was in 1916 - approached him about making a film in the grounds. They needed 150 men as soldiers. Prisoners were used. Every bit of equipment, arms, (blank) ammo was returned and the filming was enjoyed by all. The movie was called "Brand of Cowardice" and starred Lionel Barrymore. This did more to establish morale in the institution than anything. Trust. Thereby the name "Reformatory without Walls". In Jan. 1920 Lewis Lawes arrived as the new Warden of Sing Sing Prison. He would bring his values and ideas on prison reform with him. Hence his new name, the "Reform Warden of Sing Sing". (Excerpt from an Online Review by DeGray.).…
