Cloth. Condizione: Very Good. A smart english translation of this classic romantic tragedy by Friedrich von Schiller. A very scarce new edition. In the publisher's full cloth binding with gilt detail. With an engraved monochrome frontispiece. 'The Maid of Orleans' is a classic romantic tragedy by Friedrich von Schiller. The story loosely follows the life of Joan of Arc and was one of his most frequently performed pieces. Translated into english by Lewis Filmore, the translator of Goethe's "Faust". With 36 pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear of the book. Bookplate for one 'Percival F. Hinton' to the front paste-down. In the original full cloth binding with gilt detail. Externally, smart with marks to the boards and shelf wear to the extremities. Bookplate to the front paste-down. Internally, generally firmly bound. Title page is loosening and could become loose with further handling. Pages age-toned but generally bright and clean, with just the odd mark. Offsetting to the rear of the frontispiece and to the title page. Spotting to the frontispiece tissue guard. Very Good. Not Stated (illustratore). book.…

Leather. Condizione: Very Good Indeed. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's Faust bound together with the poetical works of Edward Young and James Thomson. Three volumes bound together in a half calf binding with cloth covered boards and decorative gilt detailing. All three works to this volume have been bound without their title pages. The first volume present is 'The Poetical Works of James Thomson', complete with a frontispiece and illustrated title page. Thomson (1700-1748) was a Scottish poet and playwright, perhaps best known for constructing the lyrics of 'Rule, Brittania!'. The second work present is 'The Poetical Works of Edward Young'. Young (1683-1765) was an English poet best known for 'Night-Thoughts' - included in this volume - a series of philosophical writings in blank verse. He is believed to have inspired Goethe, the playwright responsible for the third volume within this binding. Goethe's 'Faust', presented here with an illustrated frontispiece, is frequently identified as the Greatest work of German Literature. Here it is in the uncommon translation to English by Lewis Filmore, who did not do so until 1841.A contemporary owner's signature to the front free endpaper. The volumes are bound together in a half calf binding with cloth covered boards. Some tidemarks to the boards. Some bumping to the extremities, with small losses to the leather a the extremities, joints, and spine. A contemporary owner's inscription to the front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Some spotting throughout, concentrated to the final few pages. Occasional pencil notations throughout, always in margins and not interfering with text. Very Good Indeed. Not Stated (illustratore). book.…
