Nicht nur verleiht der Zuspruch des Publikums dem Star seinen Status als solchen, sondern wie bei anderen "Medienprodukten" oder "kulturellen Texten" auch entsteht seine Bedeutung erst im Prozess der Rezeption. So ist einiges darüber bekannt, warum es Stars gibt, aber es ist keineswegs einfach zu beantworten, warum ein bestimmter Star erfolgreich war bzw. ist, geschweige denn vorauszusehen, wie lange er es bleiben wird. Stars sind zweifellos für die Medienindustrie von à konomischem Nutzen, aber nicht jeder Schauspieler, Sänger, Regisseur etc., mag er selbst auch noch so ehrgeizig sein oder intensiv beworben werden, findet beim Publikum Resonanz. Will man sich also weder mit einer vagen Vorstellung von "Aura" seitens des Stars noch mit dem Verdacht, die Medien kà nnten ihr Publikum einfach gleich mitproduzieren, begnügen, muss man konkret untersuchen, was einen bestimmten Star für sein Publikum unter anderen "Kandidaten" heraushebt. Abgesehen von dem Problem, dass Rezipienten generell nur bedingt über ihr Erleben, ihre Motivationen etc. Auskunft geben wollen oder kà nnen, stellt sich diese Frage besonders bei einem historischen Publikum als praktisch schwierig zu erforschen dar. In dieser Studie wird erstmalig anhand des konkreten Beispiels Clint Eastwood versucht, kultur- und sozialwissenschaftliche Ansätze zu kombinieren und mit Hilfe von bisher ungenutzten Quellen das historische Publikum eines Stars demographisch differenziert zu beschreiben sowie die sozio-psychologischen Ursachen für seinen Erfolg zu rekonstruieren.
