This was the first of not many novels by Lin Tai-Yi, and a tale of an ordinary Chinese family coping with the privations and tragedy of the Sino-Japanese war. Although written when she was just 17 years old, this young lady grew up imbued with literature and with a passion to promote Chinese culture and philosophy to a Western readership. Her father was Lin Yutang, the prominent and influential Chinese writer and inventor who moved with his family from Beijing to the U.S. when Tai-Yi was just ten. Apart from his writings, Dr Lin made his mark on the world when he managed what was thought to be impossible by inventing a workable Chinese typewriter. Anyways, Papa Lin and his invention are hardly relevant to this novel of his daughter's so let's get back to this book. This wartime book has some scattered light fading to the green cloth boards, and the edges of the textblock are just a little dusty, but it is really very good indeed in a very good, un-clipped dust jacket with slight edgewear, nicks to spine ends, and two small areas of wear to spine and front panel. The rear panel caries a long endorsement by Pearl S. Buck, whose 1943 novel "The Promise" is advertised on the rear flap. A highly presentable copy of a scarce book.
