Soft Cover. Condizione: Fine. The Portuguese colony of Macau (Macao) was the first permanent settlement of Western merchants and missionaries allowed to be established in China (1557). Later, as other Western nations began trading with the Middle Kingdom, Canton became the center of this seasonal activity, but the Chinese forbade any permanent settlement at this site. Thus Western merchants engaged in the China trade established permanent homes with the Portuguese in Macau. Many being Protestant, the Portuguese authorities would not allow their dead to be buried in their own Catholic cemetery; thus in 1821 the foreign community established a Protestant cemetery in the colony. Following a seven year study, the author presents his findings on the lives and stories of the people therein interred. Several are very well known the artist George Chinnery and the missionary Robert Morrison, for example but many other fascinating personalities are revealed. Appendices list all of the names of those interred by last name and by location within the cemetery.
