Contemporary bibliographical records confirm the 1948 Hutchinson publication and 470-page extent. Original red cloth boards with gilt lettering to the spine. The cloth remains clean and strong overall, with the gilt lettering clearly retained. Binding firm. Internally clean overall, with the expected light age-toning associated with the paper stock of the period. Complete with the scarce original photographic dust jacket. The jacket has considerable age-related wear, including tanning, rubbing, edge wear, tears, chipping and areas of loss, particularly around the spine and upper and lower edges. The scarcity of the jacket is significant in comparison with currently available copies: the present AbeBooks results are predominantly jacketless. Also retained with this copy is an original Lloyd George Memorial Appeal leaflet and donation form, appealing for funds for the Lloyd George Memorial at Llanystumdwy and the associated memorial fund. The leaflet lists numerous contemporary supporters of the appeal and survives loosely inserted in the volume. Published three years after Lloyd George's death, the biography was prepared by Malcolm Thomson with the collaboration of Frances, Countess Lloyd-George of Dwyfor, Lloyd George's widow and former secretary. A contemporary review in The Spectator records that Thomson had worked with Lloyd George for fifteen years, had studied his papers closely, and produced the book with the Countess's collaboration. The original published price was 25 shillings. The volume covers Lloyd George's Welsh upbringing and early career, his rise through Liberal politics, his period as Chancellor of the Exchequer, the First World War and his premiership, the Versailles settlement, his subsequent political career and his later years. Addressed To the Officer in Charge, Passport Office and signed F. L. Stevenson, with her office added beneath. Two former paperclip positions have caused rust staining and small areas of paper loss, otherwise very good. 'Mr Lloyd George would be much obliged if you will see that Mrs Pankhurst and Miss Grace Roe obtain facilities to travel backwards and forwards between London and Paris whenever they have occasion to do so'. An uncommon First World War document about two leading members of the militant suffrage movement. Mrs Pankhurst is Emmeline Pankhurst, founder and leader of the Women's Social and Political Union, while Grace Roe was a senior WSPU organiser who had acted as an intermediary between the organisation in Britain and Christabel Pankhurst in Paris. The letter was written while Lloyd George was Secretary of State for War, several months before he replaced Asquith as Prime Minister. It directs the Passport Office to facilitate unrestricted wartime movement between London and Paris for Pankhurst and Roe, at a time when international travel was closely controlled. The intervention shows the transformed relationship between the government and the formerly militant suffragettes during the war, when Emmeline Pankhurst suspended the WSPU campaign and placed her organisation behind the national war effort.
