This scarce early auto route book contains maps of the roads between Los Angeles, California and Miami, Florida, with many other roads linking other cities, such as Denver, Memphis and Kansas City, also shown. The maps, in the form of strip maps, highlight the roads but not the surrounding country. They show distances between towns or necessary turns, as well as the locations of service stations and hotels. An interesting feature is that many of the maps include small photographs, often of hotels and garages, of landmarks along the route shown on the map. These provide a wonderful glimpse at 1920 America, showing many buildings which no longer stand and landscapes which are now unrecognizable. There is particularly good coverage of roads in Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico. Many towns, large like San Antonio and Phoenix, and small like Mount Pleasant, Texas and Roswell, New Mexico, have full pages devoted to them. This is a great view of what was involved in taking a long trip at the beginning of the age of long-distance automobile travel. OCLC 15039030.
