F. Herschell); internal pages are clean, bright and unmarked (remarkably so, considering they are more than 300 years old!); binding remains strong throughout. Overall, a well-preserved first edition copy - very scarce. NB: An extra shipping charge may be requested for heavier or more valuable items. The spine is in beautiful condition- with five raised bands. The boards maybe original as they are a slightly different colour and have more signs of wear and scuffing. The end papers seem to be newer paper than the book contents. Rest of the book is original. Some chipping to page edges and some marks including what look like finger prints to page edges. Some staining to top half of first few pages but text is still completely legible. Pre-owned.

Cant. Lambethae Mall 26 1694'; following the title page is 'The Preface' for 6 pps dated 'April 10 1694'; then follow 'An Advertisement' for 1 pp followed by 'Errata' 1pp; then commences p1 of the book finishing on p650 and followed by 3pps of 'Books Written by Simon Patrick DD'; then the end paper and back cover. Both inside front & back hinges are slightly exposed, the front being slightly weaker than the back one; but both are attached with strong thread. There is some damage to top and bottom of the spine , also a small piece of leather is missing on the right side of the spine part way up - note this on the photos - and all corners are bruised; also the covers are a bit scuffed. There is browning and foxing to the first and later pps but the body of the book seems to be mainly free. I have checked for any copies of this edition that may be for sale, but don't seem to find any at all - so conclude that this book is scarce - unless proven wrong! Listed in Wing p772.

The price does NOT include shipping / Extra shipping-costs required. Simon Patrick (8 September 1626 31 May 1707) was an English theologian and Bishop. He was born at Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, on 8 September 1626, and attended Boston Grammar School. He entered Queens' College, Cambridge, in 1644, and after taking orders in 1651 became successively chaplain to Sir Walter St. John and vicar of Battersea, Surrey. He was afterwards (1662) preferred to the rectory of St. Paul's, Covent Garden, London, where he continued to labor during the plague. He was appointed Dean of Peterborough in 1679, and Bishop of Chichester in 1689, in which year he was employed, along with others of the new bishops, to settle the affairs of the Church in Ireland. In 1691 he was translated to the see of Ely, which he held until his death on 31 May 1707. He was buried in Ely Cathedral. He had Dalham Hall built. His sermons and devotional writings are numerous, and his Commentary on the Historical and Poetical Books of the Old Testament, in 10 vols., going as far as the Song of Solomon, was reprinted in the 1810 Critical Commentary on the Old and New Testaments and Apocrypha, along with works of Richard Arnald, Moses Lowman, William Lowth, and Daniel Whitby. Patrick's Friendly Debate between a Conformist and a Nonconformist was a controversial tract, defending the Five Mile Act. It excited considerable feeling at the time of its publication in 1668. Among replies was one from Samuel Rolle as Philagathus. He also contributed to a volume of Poems upon Divine and Moral Subjects (1719). The first collected edition of his works appeared at Oxford in 1858 (9 vols.), edited by Alexander Taylor; a small Autobiography was published also at Oxford in 1839. He is the author of the anti-semitic pamphlet, "Jewish Hypocrisie, A Caveat To The Present Generation." Simon Patrick, was influenced by prominent Arminian theologians as Henry Hammond, and the Cambridge Platonists; and was criticized for his Arminian belief. Spine rubbed and chipped , age staining to the boards and corners somewhat rounded. Text is clean. A collection of sermons by Benjamin Laney, Lord Bishop of Ely before Charles II between 1661 and 1668. The sermons were titled, "The Shepherd, or The Pastoral Charge And Obedience due to it." (March 9, 1661; " Two Sermons, of Prayer to God and Of Hearing His Word" (April 5, 1663 and March 27, 1664); "The Study of quiet, In two Sermons Upon the Same Text, Fitted to give an allay to the Heats of these Unquiet Distemper'd Times" (March 12, 166 4/5th and March 18, 166 5/6th) Benjamin Laney (or Lany, 1591-1675) was a graduate of Christ's College, Cambridge (B.A. 1612, M.A. 1615, B.D 1622, D.D. 1639). He ordained into the Church of England in 1619 . During the Civil War years, he lost his preferment and went into exile with the future Charles II. After the Restoration, Laney moved upwards again, becoming the Dean of Rochester, Bishop of Peterborough, then of Lincoln and finally of Ely in 1667.
