His principal correspondents were Sir John Macpherson, Warren Hastings and Sir Eyre Coote. Macartney (1737-1806) was an Irish peer, diplomat, politician and MP, and colonial administrator, who variously served as Ambassador to Russia and China and as Governor of Grenada and the Cape Colony. He is remembered for his observation at the conclusion of the Seven Years war in 1763 that Britain now controlled ' a vast Empire, on which the sun never sets.' Er wählte Georges Staunton (1737-1801) als Sekretär und Stellvertreter auch wenn die Popularität von dessen Beschreibung der ersten großen britischen Chinareise kaum darüber hinwegzutäuschen vermochte, daß den Briten vieles im Reich der Mitte unklar und dunkel blieb. Immerhin enthält Stauntons Werk die ersten ausführlichen Nachrichten über den Pei-ho, den die Gesandtschaft im August 1793 bis zur Stadt Tung-tschóu hinauffuhr. Barrow a ensuite été secrétaire de l'Amirauté et a été vice-président et membre fondateur de la Royal Geographical Society. This is the rare atlas volume of the third French edition of George Staunton's account of George Macartney's travels to China. Macartney was Britain's first envoy to China, and was tasked by King George III with convincing Emperor Qianlong to ease restrictions on trade between Great Britain and China by allowing the British to have a permanent embassy in the country. This volume includes three large folding maps and 38 plates, all of which were engraved by Tardieu. The maps were drawn from information supplied by John Barrow, who was the private secretary to Lord Macartney. Barrow was later Secretary to the Admiralty and was a vice-president and founding member of the Royal Geographical Society. Ch-1C.

He was born in Cargins, Co Galway, Ireland and educated at the Jesuit College, Toulouse, France (obtaining an MD in 1758) and the School of Medicine in Montpellier, France. He was awarded a DCL by Oxford University in 1790. He initially practised as a physician in the West Indies but switched to law and was made Attorney-General in Grenada in 1779. In 1784, he accompanied his lifelong friend George, Lord Macartney, whom he first met in the West Indies, to Madras to negotiate peace with Tipu Sultan, for which service Staunton was created a baronet of Ireland, of Cargins in the County of Galway on 31 October 1785. Outre l'importance historique de l'ouvrage, ce recueil est particulièrement intéressant pour les descriptions géographiques des lieux visités: Madère, Ténériffe, Rio de Janeiro, St. Hélène, Tristan da Cunha, l'île Amsterdam, Java, Sumatra, la Cochinchine [Vietnam], etc La Grande Bretagne souhaitait établir des relations diplomatiques officielles avec la Chine, notamment pour les rapports commerciaux. Mais l'autosuffisance économique de la Chine, qui depuis des siècles n'avait admis de présence étrangère, rendit l'ambassade le Lord Macartney peu fructueuse. Plus qu'une réussite politique, cette ambassade fut l'occasion de cet admirable recueil qui livre un témoignage unique sur la Chine du XVIIIe siècle.
