Due parti, ciascuna con proprio frontespizio, in un volume in-16° (13 cm x 7,4 cm). Pp. (12), 192; da 194 a 387, (1). Segnatura: +4, A-P12, Q14. Due illustrazioni xilografiche al centro di entrambi i frontespizi. Carattere corsivo e romano. Elegante legatura coeva in piena pergamena rigida realizzata con foglio di antico antifonario. Buon esemplare leggermente corto in testa nella seconda parte, peraltro esemplare in più che buono stato di conservazione generale. Rara ed interessante edizione dello storico e scrittore italiano Giovanni Francesco Loredano (1606-61)che, fra le altre cose, fu il fondatore dell'Accademia degli Incogniti a Venezia. Tra le figure femminili della sua opera, va sottolineato l atteggiamento e il tono riservati all eroina Lucrezia. Nei suoi Scherzi geniali, di poco posteriori alla Galeria del Pona, si rilevano delle sostanziali ed interessanti difformità. Se permane una sorta di sovrabbondanza barocca nella scrittura, che rende la narrazione legata attraverso la manierizzazione dei caratteri (gettando un velo sul senso morale del racconto, cui si unisce la narrazione attraverso il monologo della protagonista), diversa è la presentazione dell historia, il cui racconto vero e proprio è preceduto da una dedicatoria e dalla presentazione dell argomento che fornisce un breve riassunto della vicenda. Nel caso di Lucrezia, la dedicatoria del Loredano è rivolta proprio al Pona, cui viene riservato un canonico elogio, tipico escamotage letterario che giustifica l obbligata dichiarazione di falsa modestia e la presa di distanza assunta dall autore nell associare il proprio nome alla storia raccontata. Quest incipit offre l occasione al Loredano per incitare il Pona a riscrivere la storia di Lucrezia. …

Il Loredano (1607-1661), di nobile famiglia veneta, fu senatore e tesoriere nel castello di Palma Nuova e provveditore di Peschiera. A suo tempo godé di particolare fama di maestro del genere narrativo; svolse varie attività letterarie; fondò l'Accademia degli Incogniti (1630); fu autore di opere di pretensioni storiche, di novelle e di romanzi. Gli "Scherzi geniali" furono editi a Venezia nel 1632. Il raccoglitore delle "Sentenze" risulta essere Arrigo Arrighi, come appare nella sottoscrizione alla prima carta bianca del manoscritto.
