Trade Paperback. Condizione: New. Lothar Hempel's elaborate installations of freestanding architectural features and full-sized figures have as much in common with theatrical productions as with most artworks. His scenes confront the viewer with open-ended dramas and ideological dilemmas; his paintings and puppet-like characters exist as potential casts for these scenarios. Like Brecht or Beckett, Hempel, born in Cologne in 1966, isn't looking to provoke emotional engagement so much as the viewer's critical reaction to the idea of narrative, the ideology of storytelling. With a designer's elegance, he combines aesthetics from the past and the present, quoting Medieval tapestries and early Modernism, in work infused with a sense of tragedy, mythology and burlesque. The work gathered here has been shown in museums in both the U.S. and Europe, and at New York galleries including Anton Kern (2006). This is Hempel's first major monograph. Edited by Florence Derieux. Text by Lars Bang Larsen, Liam Gillick, Lili Reynaud Dewar.

"Alphabet City" fue la primera exposición retrospectiva de la obra de Lothar Hempel (Colonia, 1966), unas sesenta obras sobre una producción de instalaciones, videos y obra sobre papel que remite a la historia de Alemania, la psicología, la tragedia griega, el cine y la música y enfrentan al espectador con dramas y dilemas ideológicos. Hempel transforma el espacio expositivo en una escena en la que el espectador se convierte en el actor de una narración hecha de referencias y contradicciones.

Soft cover. Condizione: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Oversized soft cover exhibition catalog. "Like loosely bound molecules, the elements of Lothar Hempel's exhibition vigorously interplay. For his sixth solo show at the Anton Kern Gallery, the Cologne based artist brought together a group of figure paintings, collages, and a large sculptural installation including a twelve-foot rowboat. Hempel chose the human body in motion (with all its theatrical associations and uncertainties) as the premise of the work. He combines materials in unexpected ways and thus makes the coolness of the work's execution enter an emotive dance with the expressive richness of the human body. The exhibition reverberates in an atmosphere of overtones that subtly create additional meanings and nuances." Quite incommon. Book.
