Charming illustrations throughout by Borgex. Picaresque travels and adventures with witty songs. Aristide Bruant (1851-1925) was a French cabaret singer, comedian, and nightclub owner. He is best known as the man in the red scarf and black cape featured on certain famous posters by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. He has also been credited as the creator of the chanson ràaliste musical genre for their depiction of the harshness and inequality of life on the margins of French society. In the early 1890s, the illustrator Louis Bourgeois-Borgex (1873-1959) was close to Aristide Bruant , cabaret singer and songwriter within the Bohemian community of Montmartre and especially chez Le Chat Noir cabaret, Le Mirliton, and Les Ambassadeurs. This collection of songs and stories was the third published by Bruant; their popularity and the success of his cabaret Le Mirliton enabled Bruant to leave his garret in Montmartre for a lovely little chateau in the Gâtinais. .
