On observing what she could of the everyday life of an Algerian, Vallory wrote 'She does not leave [the house / the harem] alone, probably; she does not have permission to raise her veil in the streets, to show her face to a stranger'.ÂVallory, as a European visitor and a woman, had a certain freedom and viewpoint.
