He was part of the prominent Lowell family of Massachusetts, known for their influence in literature, politics, and education. After a full course of studies in Medicine at Harvard, followed by mercantile pursuits, in 1839 he began the study of theology under Dr. Alonzo Potter, and prepared for orders. Among his teaching and pastoral appointments, he went to Newfoundland in 1843, the setting for this novel known for its vivid storytelling and depictions of missionary work.
