DJ has been laminated and taped down to boards.; Cambridge Greek and Latin Classics; 272 pages; The De Rerum Natura of Lucretius is a sustained and impassioned protest against religious superstition and irrationality. The poem takes the form of a detailed exposition of Epicurean physical theory - an extreme materialism designed to remove and discredit popular fears of the gods, death and an afterlife. Book III is generally accepted to be the finest in the whole poem; Lucretius argues there that the soul is as mortal as the body and shows that human response to the fact of mortality and death can be at once rational, dignified and liberating. Professor Kenney's commentary is the first to give proper critical emphasis to the techniques and intentions of Lucretius' poetry; it can be read with profit by all students of Latin from senior school level upwards.

Aggiungi al carrelloUniversity Press, Cambridge, 1971. VIII,255p. Original grey cloth with dust wrappers. Spine gilt stamped. Name stamp J.H. Waszink on free endpaper. Series: Cambridge Greek and Latin Classics. ?This work can be recommended on several counts. Kenney approaches the ?De Rerun Natura? as literature and so concerns himself both with Lucretius? philosophy and his poetry, a fact reflected everywhere in the Commentary, but especially evident in the Introduction. Here such poetic elements as tone, structure, the satiric and the rhetorical as well as the various ?styles? of Book III are given special consideration. The text is Kenney?s own and he has relied primarily on Bailey?s reports of the manuscripts. (?) the Commentary attempts to ?disentangle and follow? the argument of the book as Lucretius ?intended it to be followed?, so the notes tend to fullness, and in some cases, a necessary redundancy. (?) This is a distinguished addition to the Cambridge Greek and Latin Series and will be the standard school text of Book III of the ?De Rerum Natura? for many years to come.? (VINCENT J. CLEARY in The Classical World, 1972, p.235).
