His studio . propelled a number of Emilian artists to pre-eminence in Rome and elsewhere, and singularly helped encourage the so-called Bolognese School of the late 16th century, which included Reni, one of the authors of this work. Carracci had his apprentices draw studies focused on observation of nature and natural poses, and use a bold scale in drawing figures. Ludovico's pupils included Giacomo Cavedone, also included in the list of authors of this work., Size : folio (407x272mm)., Illustrated title with printer's device, head- and tailpieces, decorative initials, sixteen (16) full-page copper engravings, including one frontispiece, and four (4) oversized folding plates; depicting frescoes - mural paintings and decorations - painted by Ludovico Carracci and his entourage or artists at S. Michele in Bosco in the early 17th century, telling of the life of Saint Benedict. Prima tiratura ante litteram di quello che verrà un secolo più tardi pubblicato come "Il Claustro di San. Michele in Bosco di Bologna de' monaci olivetani dipinto dal famoso Lodovico Carracci e da altri eccellenti maest…ri usciti dalla sua Scuola". Bologna, Impresso nelle Stampe Dalla Volpe, l'Anno 1776. La storia della pubblicazione di questo volume fu piuttosto complessa; la prima opera organica che tentasse di perpetuare il ricordo del magnifico complesso del Chiostro venne ideata dal canonico conte Carlo Cesare Malvasia (1616-1693). Egli richiese all'amico pittore e incisore Giacomo Giovannini di fornirgli le illustrazioni per un suo volume sul Chiostro, ma la pubblicazione di quell'opera poté avvenire solamente un anno dopo la morte del suo promotore, nel 1694, e risultò incompleta poichè si rinunciò ad inserirvi le riproduzioni delle scene più guaste. Fu necessario attendere altri 82 anni per salutare finalmente la pubblicazione di un opera organica e completa sul chiostro ottagonale di S.Michele in Bosco e, soprattutto, sul suo ciclo pittorico il cui deperimento non conosceva soste. Questa volta l'idea partì da uno stampatore, Petronio Dalla Volpe, il quale ebbe la segreta intenzione di creare con quell'opera il suo capolavoro tipografico e che seppe coinvolgere nell'impresa un gruppo di artisti e letterati d'indubbia fama e capacità. Il Dalla Volpe affidò lo studio introduttivo ed il commento ad ogni dipinto del chiostro a Giampietro Cavazzoni Zanotti(1674-1765). Nonostante varie traversie, fra cui la morte dello stesso Zanotti, nel 1776 , dopo almeno 16 anni di lavoro, il volume venne alla luce ed è da esso che traiamo l'elenco delle opere e degli autori che operarono nel Chiostro. 17mo secolo.

Francesco Rosaspina (Montescudo 1762 - Bologna 1841) fu un apprezzato incisore di riproduzione attivo a Bologna a cavallo dei due secoli. Il dipinto apparteneva alla ricca pinacoteca di Jacopo Zambeccari. 18mo secolo.

L'incisione deriva in controparte dal dipinto di Ludovico Carracci realizzato per la chiesa di san Girolamo a Bologna, oggi conservato alla Pinacoteca Nazionale di Bologna. Da notare come il Carracci sia stato influenzato dal… dipinto con medesimo soggetto di Tiziano. Rifilata lungo l'inciso, ma buone condizioni. Formato: 415x300mm.
