Gemäss Titelbezeichnung war der Autor ?Prediger zu Schönebeck, bei Magdeburg? : ?Johann Christian Ludwig Schaaff (Halle 1780?1850 Schönebeck), Lehrer, evangelischer Pfarrer. Schaaff war vermutlich Schüler an den Franckeschen Stiftungen in Halle und dürfte auch die dortige Universität besucht haben. Nach dem Studium kehrte er an die Stiftungen zurück und war als Lehrer tätig. 1800 erhielt er eine Stelle am Magdeburger Pädagogium des Klosters Unser Lieben Frauen. Bis 1815 blieb er in dieser Funktion und war danach bis 1849 als Prediger und Oberprediger an der Kirche St. Jacobi in Schönebeck tätig. Bereits während seiner Lehrtätigkeit in Magdeburg hatte sich das pädagogische Talent Schaaffs gezeigt. Deshalb entliess ihn Propst Gotthilf Sebastian Rötger nur ungern in den Dienst als Prediger. Aber auch darin wirkte er mit Erfolg für die Schulen in seinem Bezirk, da ihm die Schulinspektion oblag. So erarbeitete er 1827 den Lehrplan für die neu eingerichtete Knabenschule in Schönebeck. Vielfach benutzt wurde seine ?Encyclopädie der classischen Alterthumskunde? [2 Bde., 1806?1808, 3. A. 1826], die auf Anregung seines Verlegers Wilhelm von Heinrichshofen mehrfach überarbeitet und erweitert auch nach Schaaffs Tod neu herausgegeben wurde.?
