The origins of Nola can be traced to before the Etruscans came to dominate the region. For a time, Nola was home to the leader, or Lucumone, of the Samnites. During the Roman Republic, Nola was a confederate of Rome. After the Roman victory in the Social War, Nola, as with the rest of Italy, was absorbed into the Roman provincial system. Although retaining the appearance of self-government, Nola, along with the rest of Italy, lost any real political freedom and instead became subject to the whims of the Roman provincial governors. Over time, the role of the Roman provincial governments shifted. By the time of the Roman Empire, the provincial governors had evolved from representing the interests of Rome to representing the interests of themselves and their supporters. The inhabitants of Nola and other parts of Italy essentially became victims of the corruption and cronyism of the governors and their circles. The author details the many ways in which this happened, from the extortion of excessive taxes to the abuse of the judicial system for political ends. This behavior led to uprisings, most notably that led by the gladiator Spartacus, but all were put down with great brutality. This book explores the evolution of governance during the Roman Republic and Empire through the lens of Nola's history.
