The bodily information considered is mainly t…hat provided by the so-called proprioceptive and interoceptive systems introduced by Sherrington. The authors reconsider this in a new Gibsonian fashion calling it more generally 'proprioception', which indicates the complex of all the bodily signals we are aware of and the qualitative experiences these give rise to. The book shows that proprioceptive information understood in this sense is essential for explaining (among others) how we develop broad categories such as animate vs. inanimate, concepts denoting bodily experiences such as hunger or pain as well as emotions and abstract concepts such as friendship and freedom and in accounting for how we master the meanings of the corresponding words in our language.

Sie gehen von der Hypothese des repräsentationalen Geistes aus, wonach Erkenntnis und Wissen… nur dank einer bestimmten Fähigkeit der menschlichen Subjektivität möglich sind, d.h. sich gedankliche Objekte mittels komplexer Prozesse «präsent» machen zu können. Der Band folgt der repräsentationalen Hypothese mit dem Ziel, Antworten auf Fragen zu finden wie: Worin besteht diese repräsentationale Fähigkeit Handelt es sich um eine Fähigkeit, die durch vorwiegend aktive oder vorwiegend passive Prozesse entsteht Welche Faktoren werden von diesen Prozessen beeinflusst Worin besteht die Rolle der Wahrnehmungen, der subpersonalen kognitiven Strukturen und der Leiblichkeit Worin besteht die Rolle der Sprache, der Kulturen und der sozialen Beziehungen in Bezug auf die Bildung der Repräsentationen, die unser Alltagswissen und die wissenschaftliche Erkenntnis ausmachen Die Antworten der Autorinnen und Autoren folgen im Wesentlichen zwei Strategien: Die eine besteht in einem auf dem Begriff Konstruktion basierenden Ansatz, nach welchem die Repräsentationen hauptsächlich durch sprachliche und kulturelle Faktoren bestimmt sind. Der zweite Ansatz bewegt sich im Rahmen einer auf den Begriff Konstitution gestützten Theorie, wonach Form und Inhalt der Repräsentation vor allem das Produkt subjektiver, vorsprachlicher und subpersonaler Strukturen sind.
