Die Geschichte der Psychiatrie umfasst nicht nur die Patienten, sondern auch die Pflegenden und Ärzte, deren Berufsbild sich im Laufe der Zeit stark veränderte. Welche Perspektiven hatten die Ärzte auf die Psychiatrie? Wie rechtfertigten sie neue Behandlungen wie Fieber- und Dauerschlafkuren oder die Anwendung von Cardiazol-, Insulin- und Elektroschocktherapien? Wurden in Liestal auch Hirnoperationen und Sterilisationen durchgeführt? Darüber hinaus wird die Rolle der Politiker untersucht, die durch ihr Handeln oder Nichthandeln die Entwicklung der psychiatrischen Institutionen maßgeblich beeinflussten. Die politischen Rahmenbedingungen, unter denen sie agierten, werden ebenfalls betrachtet. So wird die Psychiatriegeschichte als Teil der gesundheits- und gesellschaftspolitischen Entwicklung dargestellt und die pionierhafte Zuwendung zur Sozialpsychiatrie in Baselland ab 1978 in ihren historischen Kontext.
