Diese Epoche ist gleichzeitig die der europäischen Aufklärung, des Rationalismus und der industriellen Revolution. Eine Woge entscheidender gesellschaftlicher Umwälzungen ergriff ganz Europa; deren Nachwirkungen aber bekam die ganze Welt zu spüren - auch die Kai-serdynastie der Qing im fernen Osten. Die mit einem Mal beschleunigte Gangart Europas führte dazu, dass man sich der alten, wohlhabenden und chinesischen Zivilisation unversehens anzunähern begann und dieses blühende, bevölkerungsreiche Land nun genauer in Augenschein nahm. Die Kenntnisse des damaligen Chinas über Europa stammten bis dahin zum Großteil von den westlichen Missionaren am Kaiserhof und ihren Tributgaben; entsprechend fußte das Wissen der Europäer über China wiederum auf den schriftlichen Berichten ebendieser Missionare sowie auf Übersetzungen klassischer kanonischer Werke und den kunsthandwerklichen Erzeugnissen des Kaiserreiches. Es stellt sich also die Frage, wie man damals den jeweils anderen sah. Die in Kooperation des Palastmuseums Peking und der Staatlichen Kunstsammlungen Dresden veranstaltete Ausstellung "Goldener Drache - Weißer Adler. Kunst im Dienste der Macht am Kaiserhof von China und am sächsisch-polnischen Hof (1644-1795)" entwirft anhand von über 400 bedeutenden Exponaten des 17. und 18. Jahrhunderts ein Bild, wie sich Politik, Kunst und Kultur an den jeweiligen Höfen darstellten. Sie vermitteln damit eine plastische Vorstellung sowohl des sächsisch-polnischen Hofes als auch des Kaiserhofs der Qing-Dynastie im 18. Jahrhundert. During emperor Qianlong`s reign the Tibet Kanjur was translated from 1773 to 1790 into the ruling families native language, Manchu. Only 12 sets of this Manchu Kanjur were printed and distributed to imperieal monasteries. LCang-skya Hutuktu was appointed to edit this edition and Qianlong himself penned a foreword. Today, incomplete sets are preserved in the Palace Museums of Taiwan and Beijing and in the Potala. The wooden covers were illustrated on the insides with various deities of Tibetan Buddhism and there illustrations are shown in these two volumes. There is only a brief, but knowledgable introduction by Luo Wenhua (in Chinese and English), otherwise the volumes consist only of illustrations, with captions in English and Chinese.
