Jahrhundert bis in die Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts. Er spannt den Bogen von der revolutionären Menschen- und Bürgerrechtserklärung in seinen unterschiedlichen Fassungsvarianten (Déclaration des droits de l'homme et du citoyen, 1789) über die Republiks- und Direktoriumsverfassungen (Constitution de l'an I, III; 1791, 1793) bis zur restaurativen Charte Constitutionelle von 1814 sowie den liberalen Verfassungen von 1830 und 1848. Damit wird die Buchedition Verfassungen der Welt vom späten 18. Jahrhundert bis zur Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts um einen wichtigen Band ergänzt, denn die französische Verfassungsgeschichte ist in ihrer Vorbildfunktion grundlegend für viele Länder Europas wie Deutschland, Italien, Spanien, Schweiz oder Polen, aber auch für Länder Latein-Amerikas und Afrikas in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts. So ist beispielsweise die Verfassung von 1793 richtungsweisend hinsichtlich der Einführung der Gewaltenteilung. Obwohl sie nie zur Anwendung gekommen ist, bildet sie jedoch auf Grundlage der Erklärung der Menschen- und Bürgerrechte vom 26. August 1789 mit dem enthaltenen Recht auf Eigentum, dem Widerstandsrecht oder dem Wahlrecht (für Männer) einen ersten Vorschlag für eine direkte Demokratie. Aber auch die restaurative Charte Constitutionelle von 1814 diente in der ersten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts der gemäßigt liberalen Bewegung als Vorbild, indem in ihr zentrale Grundrechte wie das der Gleichheit vor dem Gesetz, die individuelle Meinungs-, Presse- und Religionsfreiheit garantiert waren. Auf Grundlage der Originaldokumente rekonstruierten die Herausgeber des Bandes, Stéphane Caporal (Université Jean Monnet, St. Étienne), Jörg Luther (Università degli Studi del Piemonte Orientale, Alessandria) und Olivier Vernier (Université de Nice Sophia-Antipolis, Nizza) die authentischen Verfassungstexte, die in zahlreichen Archiven und Bibliotheken verstreut sind. Der Band enthält eine kurze Einführung, einen Hauptteil mit den edierten Verfassungsdokumenten Frankreichs (18 Dokumente), Korsikas (eines) und Monacos (vier), Anmerkungen und einen englischen und französischen Index.
